The
Olathe Rockets were started in 1994. John Moppin of Olathe, Kansas began
with a 10U team. He took that first team through the ranks, compiling an
amazing record of metro and regional championships (at the ASA or AFA “A”
levels), along with impressive showings at national championship
tournaments. John’s youngest daughter Jessica Moppin was a standout player
in the Rockets organization and went on to enjoy great success as a four
year starter at the University of Kansas. She is now a student assistant
for the KU coaching staff. Many other players from the Rockets have enjoyed
success at the collegiate level. Gradually other coaches were brought
into the Rockets organization, and the Rockets became recognized as one of
the finest Fastpitch programs in the country. The organization’s .92
winning percentage over the past 13 years has been built on solid
fundamentals, hard work, speed, defense and athleticism. In addition, this
record has come almost exclusively from ASA or AFA “A” level competition,
and in many cases, playing “up” an age level or two. Coach Moppin continues
to make himself available to all current Rocket teams and is kind enough to
offer his insight and wisdom when asked.
